Licensed security guards protect people and property in commercial, residential, and public settings. Most states require a guard registration or license that renews every 2 years. New York requires an 8-hour pre-assignment course plus annual in-service training — 16 hours total for unarmed guards, 32 hours for armed guards (adding a mandatory annual firearms course) — regulated by the NY Department of State.
