Requirements by license type

The total is the same, but the agency-law requirement differs during a salesperson’s initial license term.

Real Estate Broker

22.5 hours of approved continuing education during each two-year license term.

At least 1 hour of instruction on the law of agency.

The license is valid for two years, and the expiration date is printed on the license.

Real Estate Salesperson — First Renewal

22.5 hours of approved continuing education during the initial two-year license term.

At least 2 hours of agency-related instruction for the initial two-year salesperson term.

A sponsoring broker is required to renew a salesperson license.

Real Estate Salesperson — Subsequent Renewal

22.5 hours of approved continuing education during each later two-year license term.

At least 1 hour of instruction on the law of agency.

A sponsoring broker is required to renew a salesperson license.

Renewal notes

Every two years; the expiration date is printed on the license.

  • All New York real estate licensees must complete continuing education except attorneys admitted to the New York State Bar.
  • The former 15-year real estate broker continuing-education exemption was removed; previously exempt brokers have been required to complete continuing education since July 1, 2021.
  • Continuing education must be completed within the license term and cannot be carried into the next term.
